Devotional Thought 52: Advocate (His Grace, Our Works)

Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. (Psalm 127:1)

This week, following the theme of Priesthood, we’re gonna be looking at what it truly means for Jesus Christ to be our High Priest, our Mediator and Intercessor! There’s some radical, controversial, yet sweet truth the Holy Spirit is showing us here, so let’s roll!

As Jesus is filled with the Holy Spirit, He fasts in the wilderness, where He’s tempted by Satan. He resists the various temptations by the power of the Spirit, cutting down his lies with the Word of God. Once it’s over, rather than feeding Himself, angels come and minister to Him! Jesus moves from Nazareth to Capernaum and begins His ministry in Galilee, where He starts preaching repentance, calling people to be His disciples, teaching the Kingdom of Heaven, and healing every kind of illness, disease, and demonic oppression! Jesus is bringing light to the darkness of Galilee!

We serve a God who does for us what we could never do for ourselves. That’s the definition of grace: God doing things for us on our behalf that we don’t deserve! How awesome is that?! The truth is, our works, our own efforts at making things work or doing something of value, come in at a far second to God’s grace. In other words, His grace is infinitely better than our works! That’s some wonderful news, that we can rest, knowing that our labor and effort takes a back seat to His work for us! When we say that Jesus is our High Priest/Advocate/Mediator, we’re saying that He is the One who does for us what we could never hope to do for ourselves!

This doesn’t just go for our salvation, either. Yes, we’re definitely saved by God’s grace, not our works, but that also applies to everything we do in Christ! For example, the apostle Paul teaches that we’re often super ignorant to what we should actually be praying for, so the Holy Spirit steps in and prays for us according to God’s perfect will! (Romans 8:26) It was only by the power of the Spirit that Jesus overcame Satan’s temptation; angels came and fed Him, He didn’t feed Himself; Galilee didn’t choose Jesus, He chose them to be the hotspot of His messianic ministry! Unless the Lord takes the initiative and goes before us, our effort is useless!

  • Jesus Christ is our Great High Priest, Mediator, Advocate, and Intercessor. He does for us what we could never do for ourselves, and His grace is infinitely better than our work! The same way Jesus’ ministry was characterized by God’s grace through His Spirit, our walk in Christ should be marked by the all-sufficient grace and intercession of our Lord through His Spirit! He fully received and fully operated in the sovereign grace of the Father to show us how to do it.

My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
