Devotional Thought 55: Advocate (His Grace, Our Light)

Arise, shine; for your Light has come! And the glory of the LORD is risen upon you. For behold, the darkness shall cover the Earth, and deep darkness the people; but the LORD will arise over you, and His glory will be seen upon you. The Gentiles shall come to your Light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. (Isaiah 60:1-3)

This week, following the theme of Priesthood, we’re gonna be looking at what it truly means for Jesus Christ to be our High Priest, our Mediator and Intercessor! There’s some radical, controversial, yet sweet truth the Holy Spirit is showing us here, so let’s roll!

As Jesus is giving His manifesto for Kingdom living, He takes three spiritual disciplines, giving, prayer, and fasting, and commands His disciples o do them in secret as opposed to the pompous showiness of the hypocritical religious leaders. He ends every section by saying “and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.” Jesus is basically giving His disciples general principles for His disciples’ good works, which are supposed to shine before people to the glory of God. They shouldn’t do righteousness to please people, but to please God!

Often times, God’s glory is revealed when He shows grace and mercy to His people in an incredible way! For example, when David cries out to the Lord for deliverance and salvation from his enemies, he says that he would praise Him among His people, and give praise to His name (Psalm 35)! The greatest example of this, however is the glory of the mercy and grace we find in the Gospel through Jesus Christ! He was the Suffering Servant who paid the price for our sin and redeemed us from death, fully revealing God’s glorious mercy and love! This is why Jesus could call Himself the Light of the world; it was through His death and resurrection that the Light of God’s glory was fully shone, because God’s mercy and grace are fully seen there!

Consequently, Jesus calls us, His disciples, the light of the world. We’re called to let our good works shine before men, bringing glory to the Father (Matthew 5:16), and to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19)! However, we are not the ones attracting people to Christ, nor should we be wanting to draw people to ourselves. In reality, it’s the work Christ has done on our behalf, the Gospel, that shines the Light of God’s glory on us, drawing people to Him through our good works and witness! It’s only by the grace and mercy of Jesus, our High Priest, that we are conduits and agents of His Light and glory!

  • As our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ was the Suffering Servant who’s ministry brings us grace and mercy from God! His truth, the Gospel, serves as the Light of God’s glory radiating on us in the midst of a darkened world. Because of the Lord’s work on our behalf, the glory of the Gospel shines on us and through us in the midst of the world’s darkness! We are advocates and ambassadors for Christ because He’s our Advocate first!

And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself. (John 12:32)
