Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.(Romans 12:1)
Guys, it has been way too long since I’ve seen all of you! Hope all is well, God is too good for anything less. We’re just gonna jump right back in so, if you’re ready, let’s do this!
I love Star Wars; it’s such a great franchise that the Lord has used to teach me important spiritual truths about Himself (I call that nerd theology). Having watched season 1 of the Mandalorian on Disney+, baby Yoda and all, the Holy Spirit taught me about what our response should be to the truth of His undeserved love and favor in the Gospel as I spent time in the Word today.
As large crowds come to Jesus from all over the place, wanting to be healed, He goes up to a mountain and calls Twelve specific men that He’s chosen to be by His side, preach, and share in His healing power and authority! These “apostles” were Jesus’ chosen few; unlike the crowds seeking Him out, the Lord sought them out for a purpose. He wanted them to be His special representatives, extensions of His ministry as the number of people grew too much for Him alone.
The harvest truly is plentiful! There is an entire world full of people who’re hungry for the truth, tired of being stuck in a life where there seems to be nothing more. All of these people are desperate for the life and healing that only comes through Jesus Christ! He died on the cross and rose again to save them from their enslavement to Satan, which ultimately leads to death. And here’s the kicker: He’s chosen us to be His ambassadors and witnesses to them, preaching, teaching, and demonstrating the Gospel for their eternal salvation (2 Cor. 5:20)!
With His love for the world and His calling for us in mind, what should our response be? According to the apostle Paul, we have no choice but to offer our bodies, our very lives and everything we are, to Him as living sacrifices! Even though we’re weak and extremely unworthy, He wants us to surrender ourselves to Him as His vessels, seeking Him first and walking in Him, because He is the Way! We should value His favor and love more than the things of the world, and be freely generous when those things come to us (Proverbs 22: 1, 4, 9). We should set ourselves apart for His special use, and dedicate our lives to Him and His mission in the world, because He gave His life for us and sought us out first (2 Cor. 5:14-15)!
- In short, His love for the world + His calling for us = Us surrendering ourselves to Him! In view of God’s mercy, His unexplainable favor and love that moved Him to die for us and welcome us into His heart, the only response is to lay everything we have down at His feet. All we can do to say “thank you” for all He’s done is to make ourselves completely and totally available for Him to use us and work through us to save this fallen world. We’re called to be a people who have tasted and been transformed by love of God in Jesus Christ, with power and authority to speak truth, bring life, and bring healing. This is what it means to be a living sacrifice. This is walking in Christ. This is the Way.
